The Search for Miss Teen Earth and Little Miss Earth Philippines

10178017_244594892412552_3119214809769031298_n
For over two months, we have scoured the archipelago in search of young beauties who embody the advocacies of conservation, preservation and protection. We looked beyond their physical attributes and chose girls who conveyed a genuine love for mother earth and who are capable of becoming 'Earth Champions' even at a young age.
It all began in January where hundreds of hopefuls aged 4-9 and 13-17 flocked to auditions in Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Naga, Baguio, Batangas, Pampanga and Manila. Nearly a thousand girls took part over the course of several weeks. Through a series of preliminary eliminations, the list was narrowed down to 20 teens and 20 little girls.

Less than a week after the forty finalists were named, they were all brought to Manila to begin their journey. The next few days would be a flurry of activity. Each teen contestant was assigned to one little girl to act as her 'big sister' over the course of their journey.
On day one, the finalists wowed everyone in their first photo shoot for the free pageant supplement, 'Roots.' The girls donned the simple yet fashionable 'Jeepney' collection by stylist Jeffry Rogador. Teen Actress and singer Julie Anne San Jose also had a photo shoot for the supplement's cover on the same day. After a fun-filled day they all returned to the Holiday Inn to get some beauty rest and to prepare for the next activities.
IMG_1754
The next day, the girls were treated to a seminar facilitated by maker of Beauty Queens Jonas Gaffud who taught the girls the same tips he gave the likes of Venus Raj and Megan Young. Then the girls got a surprise guest, in the form of another Jonas Gaffud-trained beauty, Shamcey Supsup. She began mentoring the girls by sharing her experiences and her journey towards becoming a beauty queen.
That afternoon, they paid some of our media partners a visit. The little girls went to visit the office of Total Girl Magazine, where they got to meet the whole magazine team and got free issues of Total Girl. While the teens went to visit the office Celebrity Mom and Inside Showbiz at One Mega Group. The teens also visited the Philippine Daily Inquirer offices where they toured the editorial offices and the radio station.
To end the day, TV Host and actor IC Mendoza, who is also the PR Head of the pageant, delivered an informative talk on how to handle interviews and the press. Special guests that night were respected Entertainment Journalists Dolly Anne Carvajal and Nelson Canlas .

The next day, they headed to Manila Ocean Park where they had fun interacting with marine life and had the opportunity to bond with one another. And in the afternoon, their mentor Shamcey Supsup accompanied them to the Tagaytay Residence Inn where numerous fun activities awaited them; including a tree-planting activity.

Next on the agenda was a trip to Zoocobia in Clark, Pampanga where they again pariticipated in a fun tree-planting activity. Then in the afternoon they visited zoobic safari in subic where they were treated to an entertaining animal show, a thrilling lion and tiger safari and an exciting visit to the crocodile park.
For their last activity, our candidates visited Gandica Cafe in Ortigas where they tried some archery lessons.
During the next few weeks, the finalists will go through further preparations which for the joint grand coronation night which will take place May 27, 2014. These ethereal young beauties will light up the Mall of Asia Arena and for the first time since its inception, the pageant will be aired on national television on June 8, 2014 on GMA-7's SNBO. Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta gears up for its 19th year

IMG_0323
Last  Tuesday, April 15, 2014 the memorandum was signed on  by Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) president Arnel Casanova, Clark Development Corporation (CDC) president Arthur Tugade, Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) president and chief executive officer Victor Jose Luciano, and Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Foundation Inc. (PIHABF) president Capt. Joy Roa at the Asian Air Safari hangar in Pasay City.
1st day crowd with balloons
The Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta (PIHABF), also known as “A Weekend of Everything that Flies”, is gearing up for its next staging of the established aviation event. The 19th fiesta is set on February 12 to 15, 2015, at the Philippine Air Force (PAF) ADAC Hangar in Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga.
Earlier this year, the PIHABF Foundation issued an official statement to clarify its disassociation from another organization staging a balloon event in Lubao, Pampanga, and to explain its decision not to hold a balloon fiesta this year:
IMG_0241
“The decision not to hold a Fiesta this year was not undertaken lightly. From the perspective of the PIHABF organizers, our 2013 event (featuring more balloons than ever, the highly impressive Breilting Jet Acrobatic Team, and the myriad of other flying, ground and static events) would be a hard act to follow without allowing sufficient time to plan, prepare and book new and interesting activities.
We believe that by suspending the 2014 Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, allowing our organizing committee more time to secure a suitable venue for the fiesta and investing more time in planning, securing sponsorships and implementing enhancements, we can offer our spectators a truly safe and world-class event in 2015,” reads the statement.
Breathtaking performances
More than just a spectator event, PIHABF is a gathering of aviation’s finest from the Philippines and the world. Attendees next year can look forward to non-stop flying activities from kite flying to radio control fliers from electric to turbine jets coming from regions like Dumaguete, Bacolod and Davao.
There will be paramotors from different parts of the world doing exhibition and formation flying. The public can also look forward to sky diving demonstrations and a chance to do tandem jumping. Ultralight and microlight aircraft will be performing formation flying and holding fun flying competitions.
Just like cars, private airplanes and helicopters will also be doing a rally in the air to hone their flying and navigational skills. An aerobatic formation team will once again be invited to demonstrate a heart-stopping aerobatic show.
There will also be a bigger display of local aviation schools for increased public awareness on aviation opportunities in the Philippines. The Aviator of the Year Award will once again be awarded to pilots who have made outstanding contributions in upgrading the standards of safety and aviation interests in their regions.
“We want to fuel the passion for aviation in the Philippines, and to showcase the endless possibilities in this field,” Roa said. Proceeds of the PIHABF is funneled to a scholarship program which helps underprivileged but deserving youth to pursue a career in aviation. Since 2008, fifteen young men and women have been recipients of the scholarship grant, enrolled in different aviation schools.
For the love of aviation
IMG_0215
The Asian Air Safari hangar where the MOA signing was held is an aviation enthusiast’s dream. Parked in the hangar are different types of fixed wing and rotary aircraft. Displayed alongside the aircraft are radio-controlled aircraft models, balloon baskets, paramotors, as well as kites brought in by members of the organizing committee.
The PIHABF, according to the organizers, was borne out of love for aviation. What began as a “passion project” has now evolved into the longest running balloon event in Asia flocked by aviation enthusiasts and professionals from all over the country and around the world.
Capt. Joy Roa introduced the members of the PIHABF organizing committee, many of whom have been volunteering since the first balloon fiestas held in Clark. Made up of highly experienced aviators in each of their fields, the committee has worked together to maintain a carefully planned and safety-oriented activity.
The organizers expressed that their longtime objective for the fiesta is to instill discipline in participating young pilots so they can develop into safe aviators, as well as to impart a spirit volunteerism and cooperation to the community.
IMG_0313
PIHABF’s new poster for its 19th year was designed by no less than renowned Filipino artist Manuel Baldemor. The poster features colorful renditions of Filipino life and culture within a community setting. An internationally recognized artist known for being frequently featured in UNICEF cards, Baldemor specializes in simplified geometric forms with elements of folk art.
IMG_0345
Ambassador Jose Zaide, a fiesta volunteer in charge of external affairs, says, “The fiesta is an opportunity to share and exchange cultures and traditions with visiting pilots from all over the world. They are given a taste of Filipino hospitality and the fiesta spirit, and the visiting pilots become contributors to chosen beneficiaries of the foundation.”
“By creating aviation awareness, educating the young about flying machines, teaching discipline to current and aspiring aviators, and encouraging people to work from the heart and do things with passion, we will strive to bring back the Philippine aviation industry’s good standing in the international community, ” Roa emphasizes.
The 19th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta will surely continue with these traditions.  For more information and updates on the 19th PIHABF, visitwww.philballoonfest.net.

More than 5,000 running enthusiasts heeded the call of Earth Day Network Philippines to protect, respect, and oversee the sensible and sustainable care of Mother Earth as they sprinted around Bonifacio Global City for the "Pro‐Earth Run" Saturday morning.

We arrived  on the activity venue at exactly 5:00 am and most of the crowd seems to be very eager to run and make the day one of the memorable run for them.
It was a day of celebration where all the runners had in mind the importance of preserving and caring for the mother earth.

The weather condition for me is good because while we are at Buendia or Gil Puyat Ave. bridge until we go back on the starting line we experience  a little cloudiness in the sky and a bristle of raindrops that touches our skins which gives us more strength and energy  to finish the race.
Earth Day Network Philippines President Bert Guevarra said the  fun run is a kick‐off activity for the 2014 Earth Day Celebration on April 22, 2014.
"We want to promote earth day everyday, everywhere for everyone. We must have a conscious effort to take good care of our environment everyday," Guevarra said.
The Earth Day Network Philippines, a non‐profit, non‐stock corporation, leads more than two thousand (2,000) entities from different sectors of the Philippines that work towards environmental protection and conservation.

The pro‐earth runners inched and raced one another to the finish line of the 10‐km, 5‐ km, and 3‐km categories. There was also a 1.5‐km run for children dubbed "Run with Doraemon."
The Earth Day Network ambassador Doraemon, with his friends Nobita and Shizuka, also graced the event and entertained the runners before sending them off the starting track.
The pro‐earth run was presented by LifeOil, 100% pure Malunggay extract, and United Parcel Services or UPS.
Carlo Lugtu, executive vice president of Manila Nature’s Link Corporation, the maker of LifeOil, shared that "LifeOil energizes people with active lifestyle, including runners, by replenishing the energy they lose during physically demanding activities. "
"Malunggay oil extract, aside from increasing energy, also strengthens the immune system, manages sugar level, and has Vitamin D," Lugtu added.

And at last , I manage to finish the 10k run despite of having muscle cramps due to almost 2 months of not having exercise and proper training. .
Among those who joined the fun run were celebrities from GMA Artist Center. They said they participated in the event not only because they want to stay fit but also because the run was for a good cause.

Unilever and Shell improve toilet Sanitation for the comfort of Holy Week Travelers

IMG_0007
This coming week starts one of the most important tradition we have as a country and its the Holy Week. Through their program 1 Million clean toilets . It is quite interesting to have a good and comfort toilet and Domex through Unilever Philippines in partnership with Shell stations Metro wide but this time on North and South Express way, by their motto 1 toilet at a time ,wanting us to experience the kind of comfort and sanitation it can give by the use of their product.
The summer season heralds the start of an annual tradition among thousands of Filipino families traveling to the provinces in observance of Holy week. In preparation  Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation wants to provide motorists and travelers heading North and South  of Luzon access to clean hygienic toilets for their comfort during the yearly exodus.
Leading the clean up is Unilever Philippines Marketing Director for Home Care Jay Go and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Vice President for Retail Anthony Lawrence Yam. North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) Shell Stations will experience Domex clean-ups beginning April 10, 2014.
IMG_9928
“This coming Holy Week, when you gas up at Shell and take a break, you can expect smarter products and quality service at our stations.” says Yam.
IMG_9953
“Everyone deserves a good toilet break during the long Holy Week journeys. With our cleanup drive, we at Unilever and our friends with Shell would like to assure the public of sanitized comfort rooms as they rest and recharge for the trip.” says Go.
IMG_0037
Travelling during peak seasons introduces heightened risks of acquiring diseases, and some of the possible sources are poorly sanitized public restrooms that travelers may use along the way. Gas stations along major roads become the necessary stop-over points for commuters and private motorists, resulting in the crowded and busy use of comfort rooms and other facilities.
With this, Unilever Philippines is providing six (6) months worth of Domex products for proper toilet sanitation of selected Shell gas stations. In support of the 1 million Clean Toilets advocacy Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation submit their corporate pledge for clean toilets and continue to execute proper toilet sanitation throughout the year.

Toilet sanitation: A major health hurdle in the Philippines

IMG_9629
Last April 8, 2014, Unilever Phils. in cooperation with the Dept. of Health and the Bulong Pulungan sa Sofitel once again promotes toilet sanitation with their move to educate , teach and help the nation to be more sanitize in every homes toilet and the public entities as well as they launch DOMEX “1000 Clean Toilets movement Saving Lives , One at a time.” And this I believe is one step to making us as a nation really grow and achieve economic growth by having our public toilets more comfortable and more safe to be used by our own people and foreign guests as well.
With the start of summer vacation, Filipinos are already trooping to malls and other recreational facilities to cool off the summer heat. While commercial centers provide facilities that offer convenience, a greater number of establishments do not have basic facilities like clean toilets to cater to the needs of customers and visitors.
IMG_9663
A joint monitoring report by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organization reveals that 26% of Filipino households do not have toilets. UNICEF WASH Specialist Dr. Mike Gnilo said it is imperative to address the country’s lack of clean toilets. “More than 8% of these households practice open defecation which threatens water resources. In some communities, toilets are also shared by more than a dozen families which make them harder to maintain.”
To compound the problem, over 90% of households do not practice proper toilet hygiene and sanitation. Many residents and sanitation managers clean toilets using only detergents and thin bleaches which do not kill disease-spreading germs.
IMG_9636
Domex, the leading household cleaning brand in the country, has partnered with UNICEF and the Philippine Public Health Association (PPHA) to advocate the 1 Million Clean Toilets Movement, a campaign that educates the public on the health impacts of germ-free toilets and secures one million pledges from households, government agencies and private corporations to conscientiously maintain clean, safe, and hygienic bathrooms.
“A number of the country’s public toilets are in need of cleaning and maintenance. These include inaccessible restrooms in parks, museums, commercial centers and tourist destinations,” said PPHA Director Maluh Orezca during a Bulong Pulungan media forum at Hotel Sofitel in Pasay City.
“We at Domex believe that prompt action against diarrheal diseases, unclean toilets and unsanitary toilet practices can significantly decrease health risks and improve lives,” said Jay Go, marketing director for Unilever Home Care, noting that in the Philippines, more than 2,000 children under five die annually from diarrhea as a result of germ-infested toilets that contaminate water resources.
To raise awareness on diarrheal diseases and their prevention, Domex will conduct activities throughout the year to educate and train households on proper toilet sanitation. These will also show the advantages of using a dedicated toilet-cleaning agent such as Domex in disinfecting the toilet and preventing the spread of disease-causing germs.
Full force against diarrheal diseases
In line with the objectives of its 1 Million Clean Toilets Movement, Domex partners with establishments for massive cleanup and information drives. Kicking off the campaign is a series of restroom cleanup activities at Shell NLEX/SLEX stations throughout the Holy Week and summer months, a tie-up with major hospitals such as Jose Rodriguez Memorial Hospital for information dissemination and other activities, as well as partnerships with dining establishments to further reinforce their commitment to public health through proper toilet sanitation.
Along with the cleanup rounds, Domex will educate the public on ways to clean their household toilet properly through various media platforms. These will serve as references for those who are interested to learn about the fight against diarrheal diseases.
These activities will culminate with the World Toilet Day celebrations in November where Domex hopes to garner 1 million clean toilet pledges from households, government agencies and private institutions. Unilever Philippines hopes to add this number to their envisioned 1 Billion Better Lives by 2020, in their thrust to create improved, sustainable living around the globe.
