WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER

For many Filipinos, home is not a place.  Home is family.  For the season 3 Coke Studio episode that focuses on family feels, the artists featured feel a strong and particular resonance for the idea of family.

Sarah Geronimo has often been praised for her love and devotion to her family.  “I really love my family and all the sacrifices they have made for me. Whatever happens in life, wherever my career takes me, God gave me a gift that grounds me and keeps me humble, so that I know who I am,” she declares.  She also adds that being invited to be part of Coke Studio Season 3 is like being invited to a family reunion of sorts.  “When I used to see the Coke Studio billboard, when I would get stuck in traffic, I found it so cool, and I really thought to myself, ‘Wow, I wish that I could be a part of that.’"

This Band are Andrea Manzano (vocals), Euwie Von Loria (guitar), Miccael Galvan (bass), John Kenneth Macaranas (drums), Melvin Carson (keyboard) and Reymart Gubat (lead guitar).  They consider themselves as a family, since they all grew up near each other.  They started their career jamming in the food parks around their neighborhood. They also consider Sarah part of their extended showbiz family because of their management group.  Euwie says, “But at first, we couldn’t believe that this early in our career, we could be working with her. It’s as if our career will be fast-tracked, things are going beyond what we imagined.”

Andrea adds, “And we’re so happy that we get to remake her song, because her music is really part of the soundtrack of our lives."

And just like in a real family, Sarah feels like an older sister, and she can pass on some wisdom to her young colleagues.  Sarah reminisces,  “When I was starting out, what was important, yung maging plakado. But now, the young ones, they’re so free.  And that’s great because what really matters with any performance, is that you put your heart into it.  So I would just remind them to always put your all into a performance.”

Watch how Sarah Geronimo and This Band collaborate for Coke Studio Season 3. Catch them this coming October 26, at 10:00 a.m. on ABS-CBN or online at www.youtube.com/CokeStudioPH .

Visual Arts Helping Hands Foundation Inc. Presents Chapter 2: The Empty Chair Project at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila in November 2019

The Visual Arts Helping Hands Foundation, Inc (VAHHFI), in collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, is exhibiting Chapter 2: The Empty Chair Project, its second major exhibition on 12 November 2019, Tuesday.

The exhibit is for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, and of selected mental health advocacy groups, namely: Anxiety and Depression Support Philippines, Buhay Movement, Silakbo and #MentalHealthPh, as well as to support VAHHFI’s healthcare initiative for practicing visual artists and artist support practitioners like curators, art critics, art professors, and established gallery workers and other support professions.

Chapter 2: The Empty Chair Project serves as the VAHHFI’s inaugural launch and coming out event, following its initial 2017 exhibition by its founding members to raise funds primarily for visual artists’ welfare and hospitalization assistance, which resulted in the eventual creation of the foundation.

“Creating and registering the foundation took two years,” shared sculptor and founding member Daniel Dela Cruz, who spearheaded the initiative of putting together both the initial exhibition and the foundation, “it is the artists in service of other artists and those in the community.”

“That is the VAHHFI’s contribution to Philippine art. Since the foundation is something bigger than any individual artist, it will surely stand the test of time as artists continue to pay it forward,” he expounded.

Chapter 2: The Empty Chair Project expands VAHHFI’s reach and generating awareness not only among the visual arts community but among the general public.  More than providing collectors a chance to purchase unique artworks is the opportunity to help not just the artists but the professionals who support the artists in the visual art ecosystem.

Using “The Empty Chair” as a visual metaphor, the exhibit tackles the current and timely subject of Mental Health, and the idea that art heals.

VAHHFI challenged the crème de la crème of the Philippine visual arts scene to interpret, translate, and realize what an empty chair means and to conceptualize a chair series that embody the message of “hope, kindness, and positivity to all.”
By providing them with designer chairs and stools sourced from BoConcept and Casa Bella to work on, the artists not only to provide “support” to those suffering from anxiety, depression, and similar psychological issues but also to engender and encourage mental fitness as a part of one’s own overall well-being.

“In as much as our foundation focuses on physical fitness, mental fitness should also be part of our regimen to protect and safeguard our overall well-being,” explained Dela Cruz.

“We spend time and energy exercising and going to the gym, but we also need to remember to take time to relax, de-stress, and rest our minds and our soul.  Art, and all creative endeavors, soothes the soul and nourishes it,” he continued.

This much-awaited biennial gathering of creative minds and generous spirits to produce one-of-a-kind masterpieces worthy of collectors discriminating tastes to pool enough money for VAHH’s medical endowment funds.

This indeed embodies VAHHFI’s raison d’etre and philosophy as its flagship program: To give back to the visual arts community by providing funds to institutional partners and medical assistance to members of the visual arts community.

The biggest health charity art-and-design event for the visual arts community revolving on the theme of chairs, Chapter 2 is participated in by Leo Abaya, Fruitjuice Factory Studio with Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan, Annie Cabigting, Valeria Cavestany, Charlie Co, Louie Cordero, Jayson Cortez, Marina Cruz, Kawayan de Guia, Antipas “Biboy” Delotavo, Dexter Fernandez, Dino Gabito, Nona Garcia, Guerrero “RG” Habulan, Gregory Halili, Riel Hilario, Nilo Ilarde, Pete Jimenez, Erwin Leaño, Raul Lebajo, Luis Lorenzana, Gene Paul Martin, Jason Montinola, Leeroy New, Rando Onia, Jim Orencio, Bernie Pacquing, Lynyrd Paras, Richard Quebral, Marc Aran Reyes, Jose Tence “Bogie” Ruiz, Stanley Ruiz, Luis Santos, Ciron Señeres, Rodel Tapaya, and MM Yu.

Ricky Francisco was tapped by VAHHFI to curate the exhibition with Metropolitan Museum of Manila’s team headed by Tina Colayco, who expressed pride and gratitude in having been an integral part of Chapter 2: The Empty Chair Project.

“We fully support the mission of the VAHHF and express solidarity in their advocacies in promoting healthcare initiatives and extending medical assistance specifically for those in need from the local arts and culture community,” Colayco shared.

“It is a meaningful exhibition with a powerful metaphor and message on mental health awareness and related help.  The participation of so many generous artists in this exhibition without any doubt conveys an equally forceful expression of empathy for others and unity for a cause,” she further explained.

“We sincerely thank VAHHF President, Mr. Daniel dela Cruz, and the VAHH Board of Trustees for working with the Metropolitan Museum of Manila for this project, and for their support for the museum and its education programs. The museum acknowledges its appreciation to the exhibition curator Ricky Francisco and exhibition designer Ar. Jonathan Dangue who have worked very closely with the Met Museum team for the Chapter 2: The Empty Chair exhibition,” Colayco closed.

Providing Medical Aid to the Visual Arts Community

Dr Joven Cuanang, chairman of the VAHHI being a medical doctor, with Dr Steve Lim on the Medical Team, has enabled the organization to evaluate the health needs of applicants from the visual arts community—not just members—and recommend medical interventions to benefit everyone in the field including art critics, art writers, and art professors.

Chapter 2: The Empty Chair Project will run from November 12, 2019, Tuesday, to January 31, 2020, Friday—with the opening reception on November 12—at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Complex along Roxas Boulevard, Manila. The project is supported by Meralco, PLDT, AXA, Casa Bella and Bo Concept.  For more information, visit metmuseum.ph, call +632 708 7828, or email us at info@metmuseum.ph.

TPB mounts biggest international travel trade event in the Philippines for 2019

The Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines, the marketing and promotions arm of the Department of Tourism (DOT), is set to boost tourism in the Philippines as it simultaneously mounts the Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX) and MICE Buyers Invitational (MICECONnect) 2019 on October 20 to 27 to promote the Philippines as a prime tourist destination for both leisure and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibits/Events).

Now on its 18th year, PHITEX is considered to be the biggest travel trade event in the country, with close to 200 sellers and 200 buyers participating. The main highlight of the event is the one and a half day business-to-business (B2B) session between foreign buyers and local sellers to encourage tourism-related discourse among the participants, and open doors for business opportunities.

“PHITEX is mounted annually as a support for stakeholders in the travel trade industry,” says TPB COO Marie Venus Tan. “Instead of working as individual operators and sellers, we provide a platform for them to connect to hundreds of buyers from all over the world in one venue, which saves them precious time and money. The event also gives buyers a more comprehensive view of the different destinations and packages that they can sell to consumers, either as individual or bundled tours.”

Participants also took part in the PHITEX educational seminar where industry leaders discussed new trends in tourism marketing as well as marketing strategies in mature and emerging markets while keeping the theme of “Philippine Tourism: Trailblazing Responsible Travel and Inclusive Growth,” in mind.

Giving their insights were Thomas Graham, Co-Founder of Make A Difference (MAD) Travel, Carlos Mori Rodriguez, the Chief Innovation Officer of EON The Stakeholder Relations Group, and Nelly Nuezca Dillera, CESO III, the Deputy Executive Director of the Philippine Trade Training Center - Global MSME Academy, who ended the seminar on how DTI is building capabilities for halal development and certification."

Meanwhile, MICECONnect 2019, aims to accelerate the Philippine MICE industry by gathering MICE suppliers to showcase the country as a premium destination for international events and conferences.

Happening simultaneously with PHITEX, MICECONnect 2019 is the continuation of a two-year program as a comprehensive educational seminar for local MICE stakeholders to learn new and effective global trends, approaches, and methods. This year’s focus is conducting business networking opportunities to further develop the country’s MICE industry.

MICECONnect 2019 likewise features B2B sessions for Philippine and foreign MICE buyers, and include a hotel and MICE venue inspection. Moreover, MICECONnect delegates will be treated to post-event tours to highlight some of the country's premier MICE destinations including Iloilo City, Bacolod, Davao, Boracay, Cebu, Bohol, Palawan, Tagaytay, Manila and Batangas.

More importantly, both PHITEX and MICECONnect 2019 enable TPB to support and raise awareness on sustainable community-based tourism. Apart from promoting what the Philippines can offer, TPB also advocates for the protection of natural assets and expanding the benefits of tourism to communities that are directly and indirectly affected by the industry, consequently helping DOT towards achieving its goals for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Highlights of the auction are the elegant rare and prized antiques from home of Martin Jesus Tadeo Imperial “Sonny” Tinio, Jr, known in the cultural circles as the “Sultan of the Exquisite.” Up for auction is a treasure trove of precious tables in all shapes and sizes of valuable hardwood, inlaid with mother of pearl and bone or topped in marble alongside intricately designed mirrors, art nouveau frames, wooden sculptures, and a marvelous array of meticulously crafted walking canes embellished with gold, gemstone, and ivory.

Descending from a most illustrious lineage, his grandfather from the maternal side is Bicol’s Abaca King Cirilo Jaucian and his father is PCI Bank founder Martin Tinio, after whom he was named. His taste for the finest things in life and his passionate search for the best, however, trace back to the richest landlord of Nueva Ecija, General Manuel Tinio, the “Lion of the North”, who the Philippine-American War’s master strategist. He has scoured the archipelago for his collection, which he didn’t only collect but also studied, documented, and shared, such that he was known in the cultural circles, too, for his prodigious memory and scholarship which he narrated alongside the most interesting anecdotes.

A man of impeccable taste and critical eye, Tinio served as Leon Gallery’s consultant for antiques, artifacts, furniture, ivory, and precious metals. As Renaissance man, he designed Casa Manila in Intramuros; restored ancestral homes in Taal, Batangas and Kawit, Cavite; and, is remembered as an antiquarian, collector, genealogist, gentleman farmer, globetrotter, gourmand, historian, interior designer, scholar, and writer.

Side-by-side the exquisite collectibles from connoisseur Martin Tinio are paintings that will be auctioned by Aleah Angeles, whose “lyrical compositions exude a warm romantic flair”; Angelito Antonio, a prime mover of Philippine action painting and extended Cubism, who was among the first batch of CCP’s Thirteen Artists Awardees; Norma Belleza, a feminist proponent of folk art; Dex Fernandez, famous for his “Garapata” trademark and an Asian Cultural Council grantee; Froilan Calayag, the muralist and designer dubbed as the “Prince of Dark Fairy Tales”; Zhou Ling, known for her feminist Earth Mother imagery in the Yunnan Art School style; Jigger Cruz, whose shocking use of color and defacement create powerful abstractions; and, Juvenal Sanso, the Filipino-Spanish master acclaimed for his highly evocative impressionistic landscapes.

These visual masterpieces complete the array of collectibles on the block alongside alluring crystal and silver pieces, chinoiserie, Filipino period furniture, fine China, coffee table books, and rare photographs for a truly complete and exciting sale.

“One can indulge his or her taste for the beautiful items at various price points at the upcoming online auction and all that from one’s armchair or boudoir. The online auction gives clients the convenience of bidding through their mobiles, tablets or laptops, without having to trek all the way to where physical auctions happen,” Leòn Gallery Director Jaime Ponce de Leon. This convenience makes online auctions at lower starting bids—but no less fabulous pieces—trending.

The exhibition will be open to the public starting Monday, 14 October, Monday, from 10AM to 6PM. Previews of these lots will be at Leòn Gallery in Warehouse 14 La Fuerza Plaza, 2241 Chino Roces Ave. and at the G/F Eurovilla 1 Legazpi corner Herrera St., Legazpi Village, Makati City.

Career Fair by JobStreet.com helps career hopefuls find the job they love

Getting a job aligned with your own life goals is never easy, especially for millennials and Gen Zers who are devoted to their passions and are on their way to becoming the biggest part of the workforce. JobStreet Philippines, the number one online job portal in the country, recently conducted a survey of more than 18,000 Filipinos across 25 industries to see just what this future workforce is looking for in a career.

“Our survey showed that Gen Y and Gen Z respondents found corporate social responsibility more relevant compared to other generations,” shared JobStreet Philippines Country Manager Philip Gioca. “Millennials and Gen Zers are looking for companies that make a positive impact on society and the environment. They are also more experiential, looking for travel and growth opportunities whenever possible, and believe that proper compensation is essential in any workplace. Work-life balance and a more flexible schedule is also something they place great importance in,” said Gioca.

With this in mind, JobStreet carefully curated companies that fit these needs and hosted Career Fair to help young talents and jobseekers find the career most suited for them.
Over 90 companies participated in the Career Fair, covering a variety of industries like IT and tech (Amazon), real estate (Alveo Land and Megaworld Corp.), hospitality (Resorts World Manila), fashion, retail, ecommerce and more. And for attendees who dreamed of working overseas, JobStreet also partnered with WorkAbroad.ph to bring agencies with job openings all around the world – from nurses in the United Kingdom to sous-chefs in Saudi Arabia – all registered and licensed by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration. There were also companies that offered on-the-spot hiring for people who were in a rush to find the job of their dreams.

The Career Fair was also a one-stop source for career hopefuls and all their job hunting requirements. JobStreet partnered with government agencies to help process documents like NBI clearances, TIN and SSS numbers and apply for Pag-IBIG memberships and loans at the Career Fair. JobStreet volunteers were also on-site to assist in printing ID photos for free, even helping participants spruce up their resumes to give the best first impression.
“Even though JobStreet is an online job portal, we still recognize the importance of offline events like job fairs to young talents who are looking for more hiring opportunities, and we hope that Career Fair was the first step in helping them find the job they love,” said Gioca.
