World Vision’s Social Innovation Challenge aims to address community problems in the Philippines

Lto  R: Mr. Jun Godornes, Resource Development Director of World Vision in the Philippines, Mr. Rommel Fuerte, Executive Director of World Vision in the Philippines, Ms. Gretchen Ho, World Vision Ambassador for Social Innovation Challenge, Ms. Diane Romero, Executive Director of J. Amado Araneta Foundation, and Mr. John Aguila, Executive Producer and Host of CNN Philippines’ The Final Pitch.

World Vision is seeking out creative Filipinos to create the most meaningful solutions to some of the country’s overlooked community challenges.

The child-focused organization’s latest project, the Social Innovation Challenge, is allowing innovators all over the country the opportunity to compete for seed capital to fund ideas that address obstacles faced by Filipino communities.

For this year’s edition of the challenge, World Vision is putting the focus on two community problems: (Challenge #1) climate change effects on soil that hurt the livelihood of almost 1,000 farming households in Sogod, Cebu¸ a small upland barangay where almost 50% of the population depends on agriculture; and (Challenge #2) 500 out-of-school youth in Brgy. Bucana, Davao City due to their families' lack of sustainable livelihood.

These challenges were identified using the human-centered approach that focuses on the families and communities, through various in-depth interviews, focused group discussions, user journey mapping, secondary studies, and other research and validation tools.

The finalists of the challenge, composed of students and professionals from the developmental sector, will vie to have their ideas implemented. Three teams will compete for each challenge.

For the agriculture-focused Challenge #1, the participating teams are: Ato Ani (represented by Maria Wilvenna Añora, Venecia Añora, and Kent Vincent Añora), a Bohol-based social enterprise that makes and distributes organic fresh produce and processed organic food products; agribusiness Plantsville (represented by November "Tina" Canieso-Yeo), which seeks to engage the Cabalawan youth in natural farming and entrepreneurship, teaching them ways of lessor-tiller land use to improve agriculture image, link to social media and leverage on ICT in agriculture; and Tagani (represented by Kevin Cuevas and Josin Macastac), an online application that connects farmers with buyers for the direct sale of their produce. Its extension, the Tagani Plus, serves as a farm management and analytics mobile app.

The participating teams who will be ideating solutions for out-of-school youths in Brgy. Bucana, Davao for Challenge #2 are: Edukasyon.ph (represented by Patricia Matias, Ria Tagle, Jose Soberano, Pam Suanco, Cristina Batalla), an organization that aims to develop an online portal specifically tailored for OSY (out-of-shool youths) providing information on both job and skills training opportunities; Quatro (represented by Daniel Galang, Sophia Salen, Aljay Bermejo, and Paul Dela, all students from De La Salle College of St. Benilde), a group seeking to create  both livelihood and scholarship opportunities for out-of-school youth; and lastly, Sora (represented by Juan Dalisay and Jan Matthew Rafol), a social apprenticeship training program designed to give out-of-school youth basic education, useful skills, apprenticeship, and possible hiring.

The finalists underwent a three-day long bootcamp, facilitated by British Council Active Citizens to ensure their ideas are well-formed and pertinent for eventual application to the communities of Sogod, Cebu and Brgy. Bucana, Davao. Aside from a seed money for implementation, the winning entry will win a cash prize.

Aside from ideation, the finalists want to encourage more people to take action in advocacies for environment and education.

“It’s a personal advocacy so we’re highly involved in organic culture and, as much as possible, we wanted more people to be involved in agriculture,” Maria Wilvenna Añora of Ato Ani, finalist for Challenge #1, said.

“We want to make education accessible for everyone because there are people left behind. And, with this challenge, it’s specific to out-of-school youth in Davao, we can really do that and learn how to scale it up in other communities as well,” said Pam Suanco of Edukasyon.ph, finalist for Challenge #2.

A panel of multi-sectoral experts will evaluate the entries to choose proposals that have positive social and economic consequences, financial sustainability and an environment-friendly purpose. These esteemed judges are Ms. Gretchen Ho, World Vision Ambassador for Social Innovation Challenge, Mr. John Aguilar of CNN Philippines' The Final Pitch, Ms. Abigail Mapua-Cabanilla of the Hub of Innovation for Inclusion, and Ms. Christine Diane Romero of J. Amado Araneta Foundation among others.

“I believe that each one of us can make a change in our own ways. World Vision’s Social Innovation Challenge is a welcome platform for Filipinos in creating a difference through their innovative solutions”, said Mr. Rommel V. Fuerte, Executive Director of World Vision in the Philippines.

“With the help of our exceptional list of partners and mentors, our finalists are honed to help the residents of Sogod, Cebu, and Brgy. Bucana, Davao. I am amazed to see this competition transform into a collaborative project, a fitting representation of what we are always pushing for at World Vision.”

Jobstreet.com’s New Online Resources Seeks to Help Employer’s Curb Nationwide Dip in Job Satisfaction

Yesterday  July 18, 2019 at Makati City Philippines,  Amidst the Nationwide prevalence of low job satisfaction of the Filipino workers, Jobstreet.com commissioned  a study to pinpoint where the problems lie. The study is the biggest ever conducted by Jobstreet.com, involving 18,328 Filipino employees across different job levels in 25 key industries.

The results from this study determined several key factors that directly affect job satisfaction. But more importantly , it revealed that these factors aren’t the same across different industries.

“Different industries attract different people. What we learned is that candidates from different industries have different goals and are therefore driven by different motivations” says Philip Gioca, Country Manager of Jobstreet.com.” Understanding this minute differences  could hold the key to increasing job satisfaction amongst the employees”.

According to Jobstreet the study explains why there is no single-cookie- cutter approach to attracting and retaining employee. The data draws the difference between the industries. While salary is the key driver for those in Call Centers (BPO) jobs, It only ranks second for those in Engineering , which ranks career development opportunities as the primary motivation.

Those with government jobs are driven by higher job security on the other hand, for people in Marketing/Advertising and Media, job security is the lowest concern.

CSR is important in the Food and Beverage industry, as well as for Agriculture. This is due to more visibility in the actions these industries can take towards sustainability and the environment.

Different age groups  also tend to favour different industries. More Gen Z  employees  tend to gravitates toward Accounting and Marketing , while Millenials preferred  Healthcare and Consulting jobs in Science and Technology. General and Wholesale trading , the Automotive industry and IT are skewed  in favour of Gen X.

“This years study is not just the largest study we’ve done , it is also the most granular study we’ve even conducted. The unprecedented level of detail on the data gives us actionable insights on even the tiniest factors  that can make or break an employee”, adds Gioca.

To help employers understand and address these industry specific challenges . Jobstreet.com is launching a knowledge resource called Laws of Attraction. The new online tools that provides insights drawn  from Jostreet.com’s  comprehensive study of Filipino workers, allowing employers to develop effective strategies  for attracting and keeping satisfied employees. It is the latest of the arsenal of tools that has made Jobstreet.com the leading talent partner for hirers in the Philippines.
For more information on the industry-specific drivers that affects employees satisfaction visit Laws of Attraction at Jobstreet.com.

It’s On Pointé for Ballet Manila’s 24th performance season

Ballet Manila, the most solidly trained classical ballet company in the Philippines, will once again stage a series of breathtaking shows filled with graceful dancing for its 24th season.
With the theme "On Pointé," Ballet Manila highlights the most iconic element in a ballet performance – the pointé shoes which make a ballerina stand and dance daintily on her toes. The theme is also fitting for the ballet company’s upcoming performances as it is also a play on being “on point” which defines something to be excellent a
perfect – the kind of shows that Ballet Manila consistently gives to their audience.

According to Ballet Manila CEO and artistic director Lisa Macuja Elizalde, the decision to go with the theme is related to Ballet Manila’s Russian Vaganova style of training and dancing. "It defines what classical ballet is – being able to dance on pointé," Macuja Elizalde said.
This season, Ballet Manila will be staging a thoughtfully curated line up of four shows. The first one is the restaging of Snow White, the second installment in Macuja Elizalde's
Princess Trilogy, which will run from September 7-8, 2019.

Giselle, a romantic ballet in two acts, will follow on October 19-20, 2019. Sleeping Beauty, the last installment in the Princess Trilogy, will have its world premiere on December 7-8, 2019. Lastly, the season’s finale will be Carmina Burana and La Traviata, a collaboration of opera, ballet, and orchestra, which will be staged on February 29 and March 1, 2020.

“When I plan a season, I first program the full-length classical ballet that we need to present every year. My teacher and mentor Tatiana Udalenkova told me that I should always have a classical warhorse every season to strengthen the company," Macuja Elizalde spoke of their decision to perform Giselle.

She also wanted to revisit the earlier installment of her Princess Trilogy and present Snow White before the premiere of The Sleeping Beauty, which will be the company’s Christmas production, to factor in continuity.

"I love the fact that we are opening our 24th season with Snow White because it captures the fun everyone needs to have when watching and dancing ballet," she said.
After the first two installments of the trilogy, Macuja Elizalde said that the best is yet to come with the final production. "I am saving the best for last. The Princess Trilogy is going to conclude with a bang!" she said.

Talking about the last show, Carmina Burana and La Traviata, Macuja Elizalde said that the back-to-back presentation is a fitting finale to their 24th season.
"I have always wanted to choreograph to the music of my favorite opera – La Traviata – and am excited to collaborate with my long time “partner in crime”, Ballet Manila co-artistic director Osias Barroso. Rudy De Dios, recently retired principal dancer of the company, will be making an auspicious choreographic debut in his first full-length evening work with Carmina Burana," she said.

With the start of the 24th season just around the corner, Ballet Manila is all set to once again capture the hearts of their audiences and showcase a production that reflects their refined techniques, dignified artistry, magnificent storytelling, and genuine passion for dancing.

All of Ballet Manila’s 24th performance season shows will be staged at the Aliw Theater, Pasay City.
