Women Redefined: The 3rd Belle de Jour Women’s Summit

Nearly 500 participants gathered for the 3rd Women’s Summit recently organized by Viviamo! Inc., the company behind Belle De Jour (BDJ) Power Planner. With the theme “Women Redefined”, this year’s event aimed to equip millennials with encouraging messages from strong female role models who are redefining the society’s standards for women.

“Our society has constantly bombarded today’s women - especially the millennials - with unrealistic standards regarding beauty and career, making it hard for them to find themselves and lead an authentic life. Through the Women’s Summit, Viviamo! Inc. hopes to empower them as they pursue fulfillment while being true to their identity,” shared BDJ founder Darlyn Ty-Nilo.

At the summit, guests were treated to inspiring talks and fun activities at the Samsung Hall of SM Aura Premier. The day began with a keynote speech by Ty-Nilo, who talked about the importance of claiming one’s success.

“To own up to your success is not a form of bragging, rather a means to realize that all the sweat and tears that you put into your job are making a difference,” she said, adding, “Women should learn to acknowledge their achievements so that they can inspire others to reach for their dreams.”

Meanwhile, Rachel de Villa, co-founder and chief technology officer of Cropital, opened the first plenary session entitled Resilient Females, which focused on overcoming one’s circumstances and maximizing one’s blessings. De Villa shared that she has always considered herself a problem solver, so she developed Cropital when she found the opportunity to help Filipino farmers access financial support.

Through Cropital, anyone can provide farmers with funds for proper equipment and training from agriculture experts.

For her part, PinoyAkoBlog.com owner Jover Laurio continues to publish critical articles on the country’s political situation, despite the relentless cyberbullying and death threats. Laurio has drawn flak for being outspoken in her fight against fake news.

At the second plenary dubbed Courageous Females, resource speakers talked about living their authentic selves and defying expectations regarding women’s roles in the society. Blu Pingoy, for instance, courageously pursued her dream of becoming a pilot, a job usually taken on by males. With her persistence, Pingoy became one of the first few female commercial pilots in the country.

Meanwhile, singer-songwriter and alopecia areata awareness advocate Abby Asistio did not allow the society’s standards to define her. As someone who suffered from alopecia or hair loss at an early age, she encouraged women to embrace their uniqueness and get over their insecurities. “Even if society says kailangan long hair para maging girly ka, eh hindi ako long-haired eh. Dapat manggaling sa sarili ko na, okay lang kahit hindi long hair, maganda pa ako with short hair. Just be open to embracing your own uniqueness.”

Aside from promoting resilience and courage, the summit also stressed the value of paving one’s path and sustaining success in the third plenary session called Resourceful Females, featuring businesswomen Audrey Tangonan and Kathleen Yu.

Starting a business is risky, but Sinaya Cup founder Audrey Tangonan persevered because she believed that her idea can genuinely improve people’s lives. Now, her menstrual cup business has attained massive success locally and internationally.
Kathleen Yu, owner of Manila-based tech start-up Rumarocket Inc., also shared the moving story of her business. From the initial failures, Kathleen resolved to learn from mistakes and bounce back. “As long as I was alive, I could always change and grow and learn and become different,” she said.

These speakers’ thoughts echo the women’s advocacy of Belle De Jour, which has always aimed to empower modern Filipina women by equipping them with knowledge, confidence, and self-appreciation. As Ty-Nilo explains, “We hope to help build a world where women are bound not by societal expectations, but by their vision of who they really want to be.”

The 3rd BDJ Women’s Summit was co-presented by Chinoy TV, Lipault and Sun Life Financial. Major sponsors include Food Panda, Modess, Wacoal, GCash, Style Genie, Biore, Caronia, Celeteque, Cinnabon, Fitness Gourmet, Jergens, Jollibee, Kipling, Liese, MegRhythm, Parisian Shoes and Bags, Serenitea, Zenutrients, Features and Shades, and Award Extremes Inc.
Ace Water Spa, Chef Tony, Frankie’s, Goldilocks, and McDonald’s provided loot bags and raffle prizes, while Adobo Magazine, Rappler, and When in Manila served as media partners.

Forget Being A Night Owl, Getting Better ZZZ’s Is What’s Cool (and Healthy)

Yesterday, Uratex had a talk together with the online bloggers and  traditional media concerning Sleep and its prevalent problems on our society considering living in the high tech digital world we have this 21st Century.

We live in a place where people tend to work even at night. The rise of the call centers , The internet communications that wo'nt give us any reason to call and speak to a person or even our love ones. These people are the call center agents,  the hospital employees , security guards, communication agencies and almost every businesses that are online.

Doctors are now more than ever have to assist us on how we should  have better sleep and the right time shifting schedules we have had in our daily grind of life.

Sleep is a very important part of our lifestyles. Did you know that an adult should be getting about seven to eight hours of sleep every day to properly recharge? Getting an appropriate amount of rest has a number of benefits including improved memory function, a stronger immune system, better concentration, and even weight loss. On the other hand, losing an hour of sleep from the recommended number of hours significantly reduces an individual’s ability to function at their maximum capacity.

Humans generally spend 1/3 of their lives sleeping. Moreover, it is an activity considered to be just as important as following a healthy diet and exercise. On the other hand, trivia shows that humans are also the only mammal that willingly delays sleep.

True enough, getting proper zzz’s is something most of us often take for granted. A shocking worldwide statistic has ranked the Philippines as the fifth country with the worst sleepers, with individuals getting an average of only six hours and 22 minutes of sleep. Sleep deprivation in the country affects about 50 million Filipinos, making the problem a national issue.

Regular loss of proper sleep can lead to circadian rhythm disorders. The circadian rhythm is a term that refers to a person’s internal body clock that regulates the 24-hour cycle of biological processes. It’s the body’s very own timer that triggers the body’s natural sleep and wake cycle. For adults, a dip in energy commonly occurs in the middle of the night and after lunch time. Noticeable big dips on this routine commonly means that an individual is sleep-deprived and is not getting enough rest.

Circadian rhythm disorders happen when there is a mismatch on the internal body clock due to the continuous disruption of sleep patterns. One of the most common disorder falling in this category is delayed sleep, which causes a person to feel tired at a later time than the usual. Individuals with this kind of disorder are the night owls, or those who feel more productive, alert, and creative late at night.

The opposite of this is advanced sleep phase disorder which is characterized by regular early bedtimes (6PM to 9PM), a habit that is very common among the elderly. In the Philippines, however, one very common sleep problem is shift work disorder caused by irregular sleeping patterns from night shifts. Common among business processing outsource (call center) employees, the disorder arises when the circadian rhythm cannot properly adjust to changing sleep patterns. Shift work disorder can often lead to problems like excessive sleepiness and insomnia.

But what makes a good sleep? According to the World Association of Sleep Medicine, there are a number of ways one can do to improve their sleeping patterns. The following are tips you can follow:

1. Refraining from using your bed for regular activities (e.g. eating, working, etc.)
2. Avoiding intake of caffeine six hours before bedtime.
3. Eating a light meal for dinner.
4. Limiting naps to not more than 45 minutes.
5. Creating a comfortable sleeping environment (using the right mattress and bedding, keeping the room dark and well-ventilated).

With sleep deprivation being a real concern in the country, several big names in the industry have jumped into action to help solve the problem. Among the leaders in the pack are The Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine (PSSM) comprised of physicians and sleep doctors, and the World Sleep Society, an association of sleep specialists focused on advancing sleep health worldwide by encouraging education and promoting sleep-focused research. Partnering with them is Uratex, The Sleep Specialist, the leading manufacturer of innovative sleep solutions. The company has been focused in creating quality sleep innovations like specialized mattresses and pillows that can help improve an individual’s rest.

These names have been proactive in furthering sleep education and awareness in the country. This month, they are coming together once more for World Sleep Day, an annual event that celebrates sleep importance and tackles issues like better sleep education. Organized by the World Sleep Day Committee, the event will be held on March 16 and will feature talks on better prevention and management of sleep disorders.

Sleep deprivation should be considered a major national issue that should be swiftly addressed. With proper education and the support of thought leaders and action takers in the industry, the country is taking a progressive step towards achieving proper zzz’s.

TIMELESS DESIGNS AT THE 12th GOLDILOCKS ICDC

This years 12th ICDC cake decorating challenge done by Goldilocks last Saturday was one of the most successful and we'll appreciated due to enthused students and schools that are one of the finest culinary in the country.

Notwithstanding the intensity of the lights on stage, six teams from colleges across the nation went head-to-head for the annual Goldilocks Intercollegiate Cake Decorating Challenge (ICDC).

The competition was fierce, and as the clock wound down with around five minutes left, the audience roared with applause, cheering on the teams to add the finishing touches to their cakes

Emerging victorious from this dazzling display of creativity and teamwork was the Lyceum of the Philippines Laguna; which previously took the category prize for the “Tribute to the Present” and “Tribute to the Future” themed cakes, before being awarded as the overall champion. With this feat, the talented students not only won considerable prizes for their school, but earned the right to take the travelling trophy back with them to the proud province Southeast of Manila.

This is the 12th time that the ICDC has been held, and every year the stakes are raised higher. The skill-level of the participants has consistently increased, thus elevating the contest into one of the most anticipated events for culinary arts programs.

“For 2018, Goldilocks has gone back to the very heart and essence of the competition, which is the cake itself and what it represents,” explained Goldilocks Marketing Director Cherry Caluya. “Cakes are meant to celebrate sweet moments and special memories, which all become timeless. We have therefore made this the theme for this year, asking our competing students to interpret timeless aspects through their designs,” she emphasized.

As always, the teams this year vied for more than the just prestige, but specifically a baking lab worth Php 250,000 for their school and Php 20,000 worth of Goldilocks gift certificates. After a pre-selection round wherein almost 100 schools submitted entries, the other schools that qualified for the live kitchen-stage were the University of Batangas, Saint Anne College of Lucena, Pangasinan State University, Holy Cross of Davao College, and the Western Institute of Technology Iloilo, which won the category prize for the “Tribute to the Past” theme.

Being the country’s number one bakeshop for over five decades, Goldilocks is certainly the most qualified to stage an ICDC-style competition, providing the materials and ingredients along with co-sponsor Avoset Whip N’ Cream. Renowned chef and ICDC judge Jackie Ang Po noted that “for the past 12 years, Goldilocks and Avoset continue to reinvent this competition and make it fresh. They have really created something that Culinary Arts students aspire for, and competing on the kitchen stage at this level teaches the students so many lessons that go beyond classroom work.” Also serving as judges were exemplary pastry chef Penk Ching, Patrick Tong of Avoset, and Mille Dizon from the SM Group.

While the ICDC was the culminating activity of the day, loads of fun and educational activities were staged throughout the venue. There were numerous hands-on demonstrations and workshops by professional pastry-chefs, a Goldilocks decorate-your-cake (DYC) corner, amazing cake displays, and a chance to see Goldilocks endorser Judy Ann Santos-Agonci

Launching this app is certainly a step in the right direction,” said Roberto L. Panlilio, Senior Country Officer, J.P. Morgan Philippines.
