Maroon 5 Goes Beyond Loud

ICONIC PERFORMANCE AT AN ICONIC VENUE

Maroon 5 Photo by Bruce Casanova (2)

All roads led to the Big Dome last Tuesday and fans from all over the city filled the iconic coliseum to the rafters in an unprecedented turnout as the pop-rock band Maroon 5 held the Manila leg of their Overexposed World Tour 2012. Although this was the third time the band performed on local soil, it seemed like it was their first as the event quickly turned from a one-night concert to a historic musical experience in the Philippine concert scene.

The queues at the newly-transformed Grand Atrium of the Smart Araneta Coliseum said it all. It was a veritable sea of humanity as excited fans snaked through the lines to enter the venue. There was a mad rush to buy the merchandise and the glow sticks around the coliseum concourse before they positioned in their places. No one wanted to miss a second of the much-awaited performance. Who could blame them? The mad scramble for tickets to the concert started as early as June when these were uploaded on TicketNet Online. In just a few days, the concert was sold out.

Maroon 5 Photo by Bruce Casanova (3)

When Maroon 5 finally came on stage, the screams went beyond loud. Adam Levine and his band brought the house down with the opening number, “Payphone”. Glow-sticks illuminated the Big Dome as Adam Levine wowed the crowd with favourites that catapulted them to worldwide fame like “This Love,” “Harder to Breathe,” “Won’t Go Home Without You,” “Misery” and much, much more. Aside from their hits, the band also gave worthy covers of The White Stripes (Seven Nation Army), Justin Timberlake (SexyBack) and Human League (Don’t You Want Me). They even teased with samples of the dance craze “Gangnam Style” only to rouse the crowd and lead them to their finale number of “Moves Like Jagger.”

Levine also showed why he is considered as one of the world’s leading pop icons with his tireless energy as he crooned, rocked, and screamed their hits to the tens of thousands of Pinoys  in attendance. He sang, he played the drums and guitar, he teased, he rocked the Big Dome into a frenzy. No fancy stage-work and production was needed as the lead singer’s stage appeal and his band’s musical prowess were enough to keep the crowd electrified throughout the night.

The choice of venue couldn’t be more apt as the Big Dome has hosted numerous global icons in the past and has been the Philippine home of foreign acts for decades. It is but fitting that Maroon 5, a band that was able to deliver an iconic concert to their Filipino fans perform in the only iconic venue in the Philippines.

IMAX_BRND_IIB_EN_BLK300

SM Cinema, the country’s leading film exhibitor, continues its quest to elevate this country’s cinematic experience by bringing in state-of-the-art theater technology. Introducing the IMAX Experience to the Filipinos is one of SM Cinema’s ways of delivering world-class quality entertainment.

One of the highlights in the opening of SM Lanang Premier is the opening of the IMAX Theatre. IMAX Lanang opens with 467 seats and a digital projection system that can support both 2D and 3D films.

IMAX is the world’s leading film entertainment technology. It utilizes laser-aligned digital audio feed in addition to a revolutionary projection system that enhances image quality and display, delivering unparalleled and realistic sound and visuals.

IMAX is more than a technology; it is an experience. The IMAX Theatre is designed to fill your field of vision and engulf you in sound so powerful that it is almost tangible. IMAX screen is several times larger than the screen of the standard theater, delivering an image so large that it fills your entire field of view. The screen is slightly curved and the seats are angled to allow audience to have an unobstructed view of what they are watching. The IMAX image is several times larger than any other cinema format, offering far greater resolution than the 35mm film. All these contribute to bringing images to life like no other—making you feel you are part of the movie and not just a mere spectator.

The immersive movie-viewing experience that IMAX brings is made possible by IMAX Digital Media Remastering (DMR), the transformative process used to enhance and optimize the image and sound of Hollywood feature films for the IMAX format. During this process, IMAX spends hours, weeks and months working directly with the filmmakers and technical teams of each film on dozens of ways to enhance the movie, including adjusting the saturation, contrast, brightness, re-mixing the soundtrack, and a bunch of other variables in virtually every frame.

The result delivers an unparalleled image and sound quality that is designed specifically for IMAX theatres. Watching a film in an IMAX Theatre gives you a unique experience; it allows you to lose yourself in the scenes unfolding before you. With IMAX, you are absorbed by the movie.

Through SM Cinema, Filipinos are able to enjoy the IMAX Experience--an experience that takes you beyond the edge of your seats to a world you have never imagined.

ANNETTE BENING AND ANTONIO BANDERAS IN “RUBY SPARKS”

ANNETTE BENING AND ANTONIO BANDERAS IN “RUBY SPARKS”

 _DSC1175.NEF

A once bestselling author who is suffering from writer’s block finds inspiration once again writing about his ideal girl whom he named Ruby Sparks. Paul Dano, whose remarkable performances in “Little Miss Sunshine” and “There Will Be Blood” stars in “Ruby Sparks,” a story that his real-life girlfriend Zoe Kazan wrote. The movie is fittingly brought to life by married pair of directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris whose previous feature “Little Miss Sunshine” was nominated for four Academy Awards® including Best Picture.

Paul Dano stars as Calvin who finds true love out his work of fiction. Inspired to write about his ideal girl after a long hiatus, Ruby Sparks suddenly comes to life and in Calvin’s apartment, filling every gap of his once solitary existence. But in Calvin’s case, fear is holding him back both in his professional and romantic pursuits. “He’s definitely missing something in his life. There’s an absence. There’s sort of a hole,” notes Dano.

Ruby is custom designed specifically to fit into that hole, but when she shows up in his life she also opens up a whole new world for Calvin, who has long dwelled in the limbo between youth and adulthood, not ready to take the leap. Dano explains, “I think before Calvin can properly love somebody he has to learn to love himself. His relationship with Ruby could be a really beautiful thing but he has to grow up before he can do it right. Calvin is learning that you can’t control life and he’s got to get comfortable with that.”

Once Calvin is convinced that Ruby is not his own wild hallucination but someone everyone can see and hear, he realizes he is going to have to explain her to the people in his world – from his family and friends to his shrink and agent. Surrounding Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan in these colorful roles are some of Hollywood’s most accomplished and popular actors including Annette Bening as Calvin’s mother Gertrude, Antonio Banderas as Gertrude’s boyfriend, Elliott Gould as Calvin’s psychiatrist, Steve Coogan as his literary rival and Chris Messina as his brother – each of whom were drawn by the story’s mix of comedy, romance and emotions.

Three-time Golden Globe® nominee Banderas and four time Oscar® nominee Bening came aboard to portray Calvin’s New Age mother Gertrude and her bohemian lover Mort – who charm Ruby as much as they irritate and embarrass Calvin with their sexual liberation.

_DSC5136.NEF

Banderas had a lot of fun with Mort’s cloying charm, and the filmmakers enjoyed watching him dive headlong into the role with no inhibitions. Says producer Yerxa: “Antonio as Mort embodies this kind of overt sexuality and free-form, anti-establishment playfulness. He’s totally effusive and loving and that’s what makes Calvin, who is wound pretty tight, resist him. I can’t wait for the audience to see how Annette and Antonio play off each other.”

Gertrude gave Bening a chance to do something quite different, as producer Albert Berger explains: “The great thing about Annette in this role is we haven’t seen her play this type of woman ever. In many of her roles, she brings both a comic and serious intensity, and extends that in a new direction.”

For Kazan, knowing that Bening would take the role was itself a kind of dream come true. “When I heard she was going to do the movie, I cried, because I knew this was real,” she recalls. “Having her and Antonio together was like a supernova. There was something so connected in them that you feel like these two people could really be a couple.”

“Ruby Sparks” opens this Wednesday, September 19 in theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

As a Pinoy value of caring for elders, children give time and effort to give back to their parents. As Venus Raj, Miss Universe 2010 runner-up recalls “We were really hard up before. When we were kids my mom would do multiple jobs to support our family. And Nanay has been there for us all the time - raising us and keeping us in good health. Pipilitin nya kami to drink our medicines as required - on time and after meals. Now that I am able to provide for her, I make sure she gets the best care possible especially with her maintenance medications. I value my mom’s health that’s why I want her to live a longer life and have more time with our family. Ako naman ang mag-aalaga sa kanya.”

Known to many, most elderly illnesses are hypertension, diabetes or high cholesterol & most of the time, the elders forget to take their prescriptions. With Watsons Compliance Packs, patients are reminded to strictly comply with prescription to win over their ailments. And the best thing about Compliance Packs, it’s priced up to 80% less than the leading brand.

And when the time to rest comes, she makes sure she gets to do the things she loves, too, like pampering herself with wellness activities.

Busy as a bee, Venus says, “Since I became Ms. Universe runner-up, life has never been the same. I got more than what I prayed and worked hard for. And now sabi ko sa sarili ko, no matter what I do, I would still think that there is no limit to what I can achieve. And dami ko pang gustong gawin at ma-achieve for me and my family kaya I really have to take care of myself.”

Like Venus, you too can reach the heights you want to conquer by staying focused and staying healthy all the time. With Watsons Comply & Save value offer, an SM Advantage Card member can enjoy the perks of more savings of up to 30% when purchasing featured vitamins & supplements.

It really amazes me how she is always ready to do different activities with me & the kids everyday! Christine takes care of everyone so I take care of her naman. BOY WRITES GIRL INTO LIFE IN “RUBY SPARKS”

BOY WRITES GIRL INTO LIFE IN “RUBY SPARKS”

RubySparks_A_1SHT

Not your conventional boy-meets-girl romantic story, “Ruby Sparks” leads us to Calvin Weir-Fields, (played by Paul Dano who also appeared in “Little Miss Sunshine,” “There Will Be Blood”) a literary wunderkind with an acclaimed first novel.

_DSC2116.NEF

But since then, he’s been stricken with a stubborn case of writer’s block magnified by a dismal love life. In a last-ditch attempt to reignite his creative spark, Calvin begins to envision a female protagonist in his mind. Then one morning she steps off the page and into his life. Suddenly, Ruby (portrayed by Zoe Kazan who is also the film’s writer) is sleeping in Calvin’s bed, cooking in his kitchen, beguiling him in every way, with one mind-boggling twist: he somehow has the power to change her every time he sits at his typewriter. As Calvin tries to juggle this power, he faces a major dilemma as a writer and a boyfriend: what will it take to make this relationship from his imagination work in the real world?

_DSC7896.NEF

It seems fitting that “Ruby Sparks,” a romantic fable about how two people weave a love story in and out of reality, was brought to life by a married pair of directors (Dayton & Faris) working with two actors who are also a devoted couple (Dano and Kazan). A sharp, modern take on the Pygmalion myth, “Ruby Sparks” is the story of a novelist’s vision who inexplicably comes to life, only to prove far more complicated than even he could have imagined. With a light touch and a dash of magical realism, the first screenplay from actress and playwright Zoe Kazan attracted the attention of Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris, the married team who directed the run-away hit “Little Miss Sunshine.” The film takes an unpredictable route into fantasy, identity and the ways we invent love – and how love can re-invent us.

_DSC4531.NEF

The duo decided to approach the story not as a sci-fi fantasy, but as something that is currently happening in the everyday world, no matter how bizarre it might seem to Calvin. “Even though the story is built around a fictional premise, it illuminates so many truths about relationships. We felt it was essential for the scenes to feel real and honest,” explains Dayton.

On the premise’s conception, Kazan shared that “I started wondering what might happen if a writer had a character come to life who could give him exactly what he thought he wanted romantically. How do you love the person you’re with completely without saying ‘I don’t want this part or that part?’ How do you make room in a relationship for two separate people? But things get very complicated because when you really love someone you have to love all of the person, not just the parts you’ve idealized.”

As Kazan wrote, she began sharing her work with her boyfriend, the actor Paul Dano, and though she had not set out to write something for the two of them, they couldn’t help but envision one another in the lead roles. “I think I was always subconsciously writing Calvin for Paul,” she muses. “But the weirdest thing is that I was writing a character who is writing my character! There was something very meta going on.”

kazan and dano RUBY SPARKS

Kazan wasn’t so interested in the science fiction aspect of how a writer’s fantasy character might come to life – she was more intrigued by what would come next. How would a fictional creation fare in the midst of the messiness of real life, especially when the man writing her isn’t sure of exactly what he wants? There has been a long literary tradition of riffing on the man-made object made human: Shakespeare with Queen Hermione in “A Winter’s Tale,” George Bernard Shaw with Eliza Doolittle in “Pygmalion,” and Mary Shelley gave it another take with her “Frankenstein” myth. Kazan wanted to come at the concept from a literary perspective, exploring a writer who pens the lover he thinks he wants in his heart . . . but who makes him so nervous in the flesh, he is tempted to keep changing her.

“The story leaves some questions open for discussion,” concludes Faris, “we hope that people will leave the theatre with something to talk about.” Adds Dayton: “Despite this movie’s high-concept premise, we think audiences will identify with Calvin’s predicament.” Kazan chimes in, “I am so proud of the movie we made. After such a happy collaboration, we are really excited to share the film with an audience, hear their reactions, start that conversation.”

Ruby Sparks” opens September 19 in cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
